What’s New at Newman?

From the Director’s Desk

Another year has come to a close and the building is once again quiet and still without its daily hosting of students. For the last six years that I have been in college ministry, I find myself each May reflecting on all the events, masses, parties, and moments of shared life with the students that occur within the 32 weeks of an academic year. This May is no different and I thank God for all the graces and blessings He has given to our students throughout the year, as so many young adults have grown in their friendship with Jesus and their life of faith. I have the pure joy of walking with students through some of the most impactful moments of their life and I am blessed to witness the love of God take hold of students’ heart and cause them to surrender their lives to His divine will. In a Newman Center, I know that the top priority of all that we do is to help guide a student into the vocation that God has planned for his or her life. Teaching students how to pray, how to be more dependent on the Sacraments of the Church and how to grow in authentic friendship with one another are all vital means that God uses to help reveal a vocation to a student. With the world around us pressing ever more forcefully upon these young adults, it is imperative that the culture of vocations is ever present within the walls of our Newman Center. The Sacrament of Marriage is such a gift to the world because by it a young man and young woman desire to live their life for the sake of the other and image such a profound unity that is an incredible resemblance of the life of God Himself. I am truly grateful when we get to share in the vocations of those so close within our community, since the power of a witness allows others to consider a life lived within the plan of God. Our campus minister, Emily, is planning to move on from her role as she prepares to enter the sacrament of Marriage. I am thankful to her for all the support and guidance she has brought to the community these last three years, and I am thrilled to see what God will continue to do within her life, especially as she begins her vocation of marriage. Within a Newman Center, we also love to highlight the very real way that God is actively calling young men and women to discern a vocation to the Priesthood or consecrated religious life. I am excited to share that one of our students has decided to enter the seminary for the Diocese of Peoria and begin his studies towards the priesthood this summer. Two of our FOCUS missionaries are leaving campus to enter two different convents of women religious: one to the Dominican sisters in Nashville and the other to the Franciscan Sisters in Alton, Illinois. I ask that you keep them in your prayers as they begin this new chapter of life. It is a great Truth to state that God is always calling and inviting us into deeper friendship with Him. May we be open to the vocation that God has in store for us, and may we desire to want to be who He wants us to be.

Sunday Homilies

Can’t Miss from the Campus Minister

We had a strong finish to a great semester at the Newman Center! We honored 20 graduates from our community at our Grad Mass on May 4th. This was our biggest group of graduates from the last few years. We are so proud of all they've done, and it was great celebrating them! The Center gets quieter as finals week passes but we enjoyed seeing students as they study and rest! We had plenty of snacks and coffee on hand. The Conclave was also quite the excitement and students watched it unfold and were tuned in when the new Holy Father was announced! Now that the Summer is here the Newman Center has a more limited schedule, but we still have mass on Sundays, Wednesdays & Fridays at 5pm.

On a personal note, I have made the bittersweet decision to leave my role at the Newman Center! I have loved serving this community and getting to support all of our amazing students. I have a lot of big changes coming this Summer with my wedding coming just around the corner and thought this would be a good time for a new chapter. Thank you to everyone who supports and keeps the Newman Center in their prayers. It has been a joy to see how this community has grown over the last three years!

Alumni Album

One thing that we love about the John Paul II Newman Center community is that you will always be a part of it. With that being said, in future newsletters, we want to see what everyone is getting up to! Marriages, babies, anniversaries, big life events that we can keep in our prayers! Years ago, we would always be told “a family that prays together, stays together” and that still holds true. So please, send us your photos and stories to the office email - [email protected], so we can all join in the celebration of each other’s lives!

On behalf of the JPII Newman Center Staff

The Spring semester was definitely one that was full of blessings. Every semester brings new students, and with that, comes new memories. Though it’s not just the students that are changing. With Emily deciding to step down from her role, as well as getting an entirely new team of FOCUS missionaries, we will be blessed with so many new ideas on how to bring the Lord to more students on every campus that we serve! The constant support from the community and families of students here does not go unnoticed, and we can’t begin to express our gratitude. We have so many great things coming in the future, so keep an eye out on our social media pages for events like the annual Benefit Dinner, and other fun announcements about the JPII Newman Center!
